The Great Pyreneese Guardian
The Pyrenees Mountain Dog also known as the Great Pyrenees is a beautiful breed that is well known for its livestock protection skills. It is one of the oldest breeds of dog. It was originally bred as war dog and later was used for its sheep guarding skills during peacetime. It is one of the least aggressive of the guard-type dog breeds. It is a breed that is loyal and protective of its territory and is considered a good family dog. It is great with people who have a large yard and can give it a lot of exercise and attention. The Great Pyrenees will remain aloof from family members unless directly engaged due to their traits of spending time alone guarding.
Great Pyrenees training is must at a young age. It is considered a large breed of dog because of its measurements. It can grow between 26 and 32 inches tall and weigh between 90 and 120 pounds, it is important that the owners of the dog be able to handle it. They have a loyal and protective temperament, so they make a great pet for the family. They are very gentle with children. They will not knock them over, jump up or engage in a dominance behavior tests with them.
Great Pyrenees dogs do not like to fetch and retrieve and do not generally like water. When used as a guard dog, they will submit to the herd as a way of gaining acceptance of them which makes it easier for them to do their jobs. They will, however, become very aggressive if another canine-type animal such as a wolf or coyote comes around the flock.
For a pet, the Great Pyrenees training must be consistent and firm. They are very intelligent and have many natural talents such as herding instincts. The importance of training is from the need to have complete control. The breed is too large to have no control. When they are puppies, great pyrenees training should consist of teaching them to learn not to jump up on people. This can be accomplished by stepping on their back feet. It is important because of their size to teach them manners at a young age. Good breeders will suggest to buyers to do this because it will make life easier and better with both the dog and the owner. Everyone will know what the expectations are and will be happier for it.
